If the ground next to the Gate slopes up then a channel will need to be excavated to allow space for the gate to slide. This channel must have retaining walls all around that rise above the ground to prevent material blowing in and obstructing the gate track.
The gate track should be well drained and not have large volumes of water running up against it as this can wash silt and dirt up in the wheel bearings that may eventually cease up.
Sliding Gates require a guide system to hold the gate up as it moves, the simplest being a guide roller either side of the gate.
Guide rollers are only suitable if the ground is not sloping, the top rail is straight and there are no verticals or clading mounted on the front face of the gate.
A sliding gate closes into a keeper that also acts as a hard stop preventing the gate from closing too far.

The gate must also be prevented from opening too far because if it does it may come off the guide system and fall over, which can be dangerous.
